Dry Sump Engine Packages for Aircraft
Bud Warren has designed and is currently testing a dry sump engine package for aircraft originally designed for a six cylinder certified engine. The dry sump engine utilizes a 2" deep oil pan with an auxilary oil tank, and an additional exterior oil pump driven off the PSRU to supply the oil back to the engine's oil pump.
This dry sump system reduces the overall height of the LS1 engine enough that it is now allows the use of the LS1 in aircraft such as Glasair and Lancair, and others with retractable nose gear which previously made it difficult to mount the engine.
